CPSG South Asia was formed in 1999. At that time CPSG, India, which was formed in 1991 which provided a model for all the CPSG networks the world over, had been in existence for 8 years.

Objectives of CPSG, South Asia

  • To expand the scope of the Mission of the Conservation Planning Specialist Group by promoting its policies, philosophy, processes and products in South Asia.
  • To highlight the link between zoo and field based activities in conservation, e.g. to promote the scientific methods of holistic, intensive, interactive conservation management in South Asia.
  • To generate interest in CAMP, PHVA, Conservation Planning, Zoo Futures, Zoo Master Planning and Facilitator workshops and where desirable and appropriate conduct them with the help of CPSG, SSC
  • To create a regional conservation identity by bringing together conservation specialists of the South Asian region.
  • To identify people and projects for information of the SSC taxon based specialist groups.
  • To "engineer" a Regional Zoo Directors Association for South Asia to represent the zoos of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Afghanistan in CPSG and World Zoo Organisation.

Wonder Gecko Conservation Plan: The Arabian Wonder Gecko Conservation Planning Workshop

The first Wonder Gecko Conservation Action Planning workshop was held on 13th – 14th December 2017 in Abu Dhab and involved stakeholders from the various UAE emirates. The principle aim of this workshop is to assemble all the concerned agencies and experts on the Wonder Gecko to conduct a workshop at a national level and draft a Conservation Plan that will guide conservation activities of the species over several years. The workshop was attended by 40 people and facilitated by Dr. Sanjay Molur of the Conservation Planning Specialist Group - South Asia Regional Resource Centre. The IUCN Red List assessment of the species status in the UAE set the tone for the workshop.

Objectives:

  1. Develop a conservation action plan for the Arabian population of the Wonder Gecko.

Activities:

  1. Network all experts in the UAE.
  2. Compile baseline information from literature and experts.
  3. Conservation Planning workshop conducted in Abu Dhabi.
  4. Red List assessment of the Arabian Wonder Gecko.
  5. Wonder Gecko Action Plan Report.

The seasonal stream Crinum: Development of a conservation plan for the Malabar River Lily (Crinum malabaricum)

Objectives:

  1. Search for the Critically Endangered Crinum malabaricum plant.
  2. Identify and map the distribution of the species and record threats.


Activities:

  1. Contacted local botanists for information.
  2. Visited the type locality and other locations.
  3. Contacted the government college for volunteers.
  4. Visited the Malabar Botanic Gardens and met with officials.

Results:

  1. Identified healthy populations of the species in the type locality and three new localities.
  2. Developed a monitoring protocol with students of Government College, Kasargode.
  3. Built a network of interested botanists, students and individual landowners interested in the species.
  4. Collaborations between various institutes initiated for future conservation action.

Risk Assessment on South Asian Theraposid Spiders: IUCN South Asian Theraphosid Spider Assessments

Objectives:

  3. Compile new information for not assessed species.

Vertebrate Scoping Workshop: Himachal Pradesh Vertebrate Conservation Planning

Objectives:

  1. Identify and link all vertebrate experts of the state.
  2. Develop a complete checklist of vertebrates of the state.
  3. Develop an existing knowledge base for an eventual action plan.

Plans:

  1. Discussions with the Himachal Forest Department Executives.
  2. Initiate networking with experts and forest department personnel.
  3. Prepare checklists from literature and expert knowledge.
  4. Develop maps.

Progress:

  1. Workshop organized for scoping the status of vertebrate knowledge in the state.
  2. Checklists discussed and finalized.
  3. Working groups formed for future actions.
  4. Reports to be published after feedback from participants and forest department.

Objectives:

  2. Some species information entered into the Species Information System database of IUCN Red List.

  4. Maps for reptiles of Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh completed.
